Heartbroke Cowpoke

It was bound to happen eventually,Knowing that didn't make it any easier for Mags. After 3 years, she has finally outgrown her pink cowboy boots.
She's heartbroken. She, very seriously mind you, told me yesterday that I have (got that? HAVE) to buy her a new pair before we go to the orchard in September. She can't wear just regular shoes to the orchard. She NEEDS boots. Huh. You don't say? Well, let me tell you...this child is barking up the wrong tree. She is asking the woman who saved all her birthday money for gas on the way to Steve's wedding in October. I informed her that there was a snowballs chance in ...well, you get the idea. I did also tell her though that I would send the following information to the right channels and maybe just maybe the boot fairy would visit.
Following information:
Maggie Garrett needs a pair of size 1 girls cowboy boots, prefers pink but will settle for ANY color :)
Love you all!

In a Low-Fat Kind of Mood

Hahahahahaha...You didn't actually believe that did you. Jon wanted hamburgers on the grill today. Because that man could eat hamburgers on the grill EVERY DAY. Happily, I tell you. Me? They get real old, real fast. I conceded though...mostly due to the fact that today was grocery day. Since I started planning our meals in advance, we have found that it is best to eat things requiring buns close to our grocery visit. They just don't keep very well for very long...and I cannot stand freezing them. EEeeewwww! Anyhoo, so it was burgers on the grill today. Ho hum, how BORING!!!!
So, he patted out his fresh burgers and I started rummaging through the freezer. What do you think honey? Fries? Tater Tots? Waffle Fries? What will it be. Ok ~ Fries it is...
Hold on, hold on, hold on...these fries are ho hum too. What can I do to jazz them up? To get excited about burgers and fries again?
I know, I know! CHEESE. AND BACON.
Cheese and bacon make everything better.
Yeah! Now that's what I'm talkin' about! I put cheese and bacon on the burgers too. Ok, so I increased the caloric intake by like 10 times...but, HEY, the kids ate all of their dinner for the first time in weeks.
And I ate so many dadgum fries that I had to pack up my burger and put it in the fridge for later. My belly kinda hurts. Oh well...someone has to eat the bacon and cheddar. It may as well be us.
Love you all!!!

My Hands On Learner

Last year in Mrs. Swickard's class, Liam learned about bugs and milkweed. At that time, he gave me a ration of poo about not having any milkweed in my garden. I refused to plant any in the flower beds and he was disgruntled for weeks.
Today, he discovered that we had some growing wild back by the stream in the corner. So, he came in and turned the charm on. I'm a lump of putty when Liam grins. So, not only did I rustle up a jar and lid for him...I demanded, very nicely of course, that Jon go downstairs and cut out a square of screening for him.
We searched ~ not for long really and spotted his prey. Ok, actually we spotted his prey three different times. I overestimated their ability to cling to a branch and lost 2 of them. I cut the milkweed and they fell right off into the abyss of weeds below. Finally, I cupped my hand under the last little booger.
Liam put in plenty of milkweed-y stuff. He's very hopeful the caterpillar will get comfortable and build a chrysallis.
He was so excited about the whole thing. I could not pay this kid enough money to read a book about caterpillars and butterfiles ~ this is more up his alley!
We'll keep you posted on the caterpillar progress!
Love you all!

I "CAN" Do It!

Things I learned today:
1. Canning tomatoes is VERY messy.
2. Canning tomatoes takes a LOT of boiling water.
3. Aunt Becky canned tomatoes over an open fire once just for the experience. Which totally appeals to me. Cause I'm a goob that's why. She won't do it again. She said it was a real pain. But, it's a cool thing anyway, right?
4. I'm slightly afraid of a pot that large full of roiling, boiling water. But, I can overcome it. I did overcome it.
5. I'm also slightly afraid of that can grabber thingy. Aunt Becky is so trusting. She just grabs it and lifts. I kind of wriggle it around and test it if you will. I do NOT trust the can grabber thingy. I just know one day it won't work and I'll drop a boiling hot jar of tomatoes on my toe.
6. Aunt Becky is a domestic queen. There's nothing she can't do in a kitchen. If she doesn't know how, the Ancient One does.
7. The Ancient One is her Kerr canning book, which belonged to Gram in the olden days. Dang, why didn't I think to take a picture of the Ancient One??
8. Canning tomatoes isn't that hard.
9. Canning tomatoes IS time consuming. VERY time comsuming. We did 4 batches today.
10. A batch is 7 jars. See, you learn something new everyday. I do anyway.
I've decided this is something I will definitely continue to do. I think I'm gonna like not having to buy canned tomatoes all winter. I plan on trying my hand at it again alone in a few weeks. If I have enough tomatoes that is.
I love you all!

The Brats

I just felt like taking pictures of the kids this evening...thought maybe you'd enjoy them.Don't really know how you could not.
They're so flippin' cute. Sam got 2 touchdowns and "broke" 4 tackles during practice today. I'm not really sure what exactly "broke" 4 tackles means? But he was proud of himself. So, I guess I'm proud of him too.
I LOVE this picture of Sam.
Maggie is such a ham when I get the camera out. Which is great when I want her looking at the camera...but doesn't work too well when I'm trying to get candids.
The girl can jump though. Do you see the dart at the bottom left? That Liam, he's a menace.
But, he's so sweet when he's calm.
Tomorrow, Sam is going to help Uncle Danny with some clearing stuff in the woods and Becky is going to steer me through the "tomato canning" process. So, I'm sure I'll have more news and pics in the evening.
I love you all!!!!!!!

FUN DAY!!!

This afternoon was "Fun Day". It wasn't actually a whole day, more like an hour and a half...but when you're trying to sell kids on doing a workbook full of school work when they're supposed to be off for the summer, Fun DAY sounds a lot better than Fun Hour and a half. Don't you think?? Jon and I both went in to help out and I was really glad we did. I have never helped with this particular activity before...therefore I did not realize that it is in no way PTO sponsored. This is all on the school/teachers/principal. I always assumed it was "worked" by the PTO...but no. In case you're not in the know...over the summer the kids each had a "workbook" geared toward their grade. It was called Summer Counts and it's intended purpose is to prevent the children from forgetting everything they've learned over the summer. My understanding is that studies have shown that kids lose something close to 40% of what they learn during the summer months. For that reason I LOVE this program. If the kids complete these books (which are purchased by the principal, he has a candy sale every 2 years to raise $'s for these books and pizza rewards for the kids) they receive entrance to the "Fun Day". Most of the stuff for fun day is donated, and God Bless Mrs Orsborn and Mrs Howenstine...I suspect it was all a lot of work. Oh and Pam too, let's not forget her! There were VERY few volunteers. I was shocked...I've never seen anything at that school so understaffed before. I don't know if that is normal for this event or not...because as I said I've never come in for it before. I certainly will from now on though! I hate fighting with Liam all summer about doing the book. I love what it accomplishes!
There were all kinds of games, 2 bouncy houses and a sand art station where the kids made bracelets.
Liam, typically, was a fart in a mitten.
They had so much fun.
Right before they left, they each received a popsicle, a piece of candy and a small toy.
Liam decided it was worth doing the workbook.
Thank God!!!!
I'm having one of those rare days in which I look at my children in total and complete awe. They are SUCH a blessing. They are so PERFECT!! I mean, really, look at them! They're proof of grace...because I guarantee you I have never done anything to deserve them. Thank you Lord!!
I love you all!!

I need. I need. I need...

an IS lens!!
Taking pictures with a telephoto lens kind of stinks without one...at least when you're in a setting that really isn't condusive (is that spelled right?) to using a tripod!!
"How are your knees doin' today?? Good? Good. Get out there."I told Sam that this was some pansy pushing right here. This little boy should FEAR Sam. At the very least this little boy should be on his behind. Am I right?? Push HARDER Sam. Harder! You're not supposed to be delicately steering him in another direction. You're supposed to be laying his tail out!!!
FUMBLE! Who's got the ball???
Yeah baby!! Sam's got the ball!!!
In between games...
Put me in coach. I'm ready to play. Today.
That's Sam right over the refs head.
I cannot tell a lie. I did not watch most of the game. I don't know who won. Or who lost. I DO know that Sam didn't get hurt. :)
Love you all!
PS Sam isn't the only one that likes baseball better!

Ummm...Peach Cobbler

Jon pointed out this morning that there were still a few stragglers in the fridge, shriveling into lonely, peach sadness. So, I decided to throw together a small cobbler. I wish you could smell it...mostly, because I've only recently discovered that food smells as good as it tastes. Sometimes even better!! Never really thought about it before, but I enjoy the smells more!! Go figure. And, doggone...this smells GOOD!!
Sam has a super scrimmage this afternoon. They have three teams coming in and will be playing from 4-6pm. I'll take pics and let you know how he does!

Love you all!!

So Far, So Good

The kids are back at school. I thought perhaps you'd like to know how that is going? We'll start with me! I am doing great!! My house stays clean for approximately 6 hours everyday. I can go about my everyday tasks uninterrupted. No Liam chasing Maggie through the house with a nerf gun. No Maggie chasing the dog through the house with a dress and a brush. No Sam verbally abusing Maggie and Liam. Why are oldest siblings so critical?? Can anyone tell me that? But, I digress. I'm well rested and getting things done around here!
Sam is doing well, I think. You know what it's like to try and get Sam talking. From what I've gathered, he likes most of his classes. He is enjoying being in the main building this year with all the other 7th graders. Last year he was in the Slack Center pretty much all day, which is a small building next to the main school building. So, he was with the same group of kids most of the day. This year, every class is different. He says he likes getting to see lots of different friends all day, I'm thinkin' he likes seeing lots of different GIRLS. He is still playing football, but I have to say I think his knees have taken some of the joy out of it for him. He's sticking it out, but I think that's all he is doing. He isn't enjoying it like he was. He even told me last night he's been moved to second string. He said it's because he isn't as fast as he was...I think it's because the coaches see what I see. The light has left his eyes when it comes to football. He doesn't love it more than he loves his knees. Which just goes to show he's no dummy! I suspect that now that he knows there is such a thing as fall baseball, his football career will only last one season, but we shall see.
Liam. Ah, Liam, he's a bit more complicated. Third grade is going to be a big jump for him. Of course, I say that every year for Liam. He has more homework this year, though not yet as bad as I was afraid it would be. Last year was the first year that the 3rd graders at our school switched classes. Liam has 3 teachers this year (not including art, music and all that jazz). last year was a veritable hell for the 3rd grade class, the teachers had some adjustments to make. I believe, from what I've seen so far, that communications have improved and that the teachers have ironed out the kinks. He has, as I said, more homework, but nothing outlandish. He seems to be all over the place with the papers he brings home. Yesterday he brought home a stack that had like 5 100's and a 45 on his spelling test. He also totally bombed his STAR test, which is a test they take on the computer to asses their reading skills. I mean he BOMBED it...tested at the 3rd month of the 2nd grade. I freaked out on him a little bit. He is very resistant when it comes to homework of any kind...I informed him, rather loudly I'm afraid, that if he gave me any crap about doing his homework I'd go talk to his teachers about putting him back in the 2nd grade. I know it sounds cruel, but he HAS to grow up about the whole homework thing. If it was up to him, he'd have the 1st grade equivalent of hw for the rest of his life. I cannot handle fighting with him about this for the next 10 years... I think he understands now that he does not have a choice. He WILL have more hw every year...and he WILL do it. I'm not a total hag though. I sat with him the entire time yesterday and coached him through it. Which he was very demonstratively appreciative of. We've taken to studying his science vocab flash cards during commercials in the evening, just for extra practice. It's going to be a big, growing, tough year for Liam. My moms prayer group will have to pray him through it! :)
Maggie, ah, Maggie ~ she is doing fabulous of course (aside from the fact that she's a lousy artist). I dont' think she's brought home anything but 100's. Last week, she was actully upset that she didn't have any homework all week. She is so by the book she cracks me up. Mrs Swickard gives them their homework schedule on Friday for the entire next week. She was itching to do some schoolwork all weekend, but she wouldn't do any of her hw because Mrs Swickard said they weren't to. She HAS to do everything exactly the way Mrs Swickard says ~ you would think Swickards got a crystal ball! Yesterday, she came home and went straight to her desk, did her homework (very neatly I might add) and promptly put it in her scot book in her bookbag. Then she sat down in a chair outside to read for a half hour. Lordy me, why can't they all be that easy? And I can't help but wonder, one day will I have to make up for it? What is so easy with her...will it balance out later? Like when she starts dating? I think maybe I'd rather have the homework problem, it's at least a known evil! Of course, already she and I fight like cats and dogs about her clothing choices nearly every day...so maybe that's the balance. I hope!

Jon still hasn't found a job and let me tell you...he and I are both starting to freak out a little bit. Please pray he finds something that will support our family soon.
I love you all!!

She's a HOOT , I tell ya!

Poor Maggie...She isn't trying to be funny. I'll tell you though, this girl just slays me. She is a barrel of laughs! One thing I LOVE about Mags is you ALWAYS know where you stand with her. Whether she thinks you currently walk on water, or maybe she thinks you're waist deep in poo...she'll make sure you KNOW where you're standin' in her estimation. Yesterday, I was waist deep in poo. The sad thing is neither Jon nor I can remember now WHY she was so upset with me...just that she was. And she wrote me this letter. And believe you me...her feelings weren't that hurt when she wrote the letter. Not campared to how they felt by the time I was done laughing at the letter. My poor children have no hope. They had better learn to laugh at themselves. Because I just can't help myself. Seriously, YOU would laugh too!! Then, today she brought home this homework. Cute isn't it?Until you get to the frog...

Yup, you heard that right. That is a FROG!!
In my defense, I did NOT laugh at this one in front of her. I waited til she went to bed and then I nearly peed my pants I laughed so hard!! She may end up being a writer...she's great at communicating. But she sure as heck won't be an artist. That's all I'm sayin' about that.
I love you all!!!

Goal Oriented...A Pro or a Con?

I'm done cleaning the basement for the day. It's not anywhere near being clean, still...I have accomplished my goal.
I am happy with my results. I can now walk to the freezer without turning on the lights. Of course, I could do that before too. But, if I tried I risked life and limb. There was a veritable obstacle course compiled of scattered cat litter, clothing, out of season decorations, fish hooks, legos and many other unidentifiable objects. Objects that I certainly hope won't be missed. Because do you see the pile of "stuff" in front of the freezer. That would be the trash pile. It only contains the trash from today's session. (Yes, the tv is part of the pile ~ it does not work. Or does it? I can't remember honestly, but it's been down there for years, not being used.)The garbage men already took the massive pile from last week. I'm in a purging sort of mood.
Really, I should purge some of my christmas decorations. The stack in front of the dresser is fall stuff, but everything else in the picture is Christmas. Do you now understand why I start putting it up at the beginning of November? It's crammed in under the steps staggered, just as tightly as I could shove it in there!
I set myself up a wrapping station while I was down there too! This dresser is fully equipped with gift bags, wrapping paper, tissue paper, tape, cards...everything I could possibly need to wrap a gift. Organization is a wondrous thing. I may have to consider moving the cat box though.
There's still a LOT more to be done. I'm taking this project on in stages. I will soon be venturing into Jon's work area. Scary. He has to be there for that or there's no telling what I'll throw away!
I've recently discovered that cooking isn't really so bad. Part of my dislike stems from the fact that I was in a rut. If you have a few (many) hours to kill, check out the pioneer woman's website on the sidebar. She also started the TastyKitchen website. I'm having all kinds of fun planning and preparing new meals. I know trying new recipes can be frightening, I promise you can trust the pioneer woman with your food. My family has loved everything I've tried off of her site. So far their favorite is the twice baked potatoes. Today, I have meatloaf and au gratin scalloped potatoes in the oven. I wish you could smell it!
I love you all!!

The Best of Intentions

Raising children has its drawbacks...this morning, in an effort to "help", Liam attempted to start my coffee for me. He isn't familiar with the new coffee pot. What he actually did was turn it off. Consequently, instead of savoring every cup this morning, I'm microwaving every cup. One very valuable lesson I've learned from my kids: You have to appreciate the "intention" even when it's paving the road to hell! While I drink my lukewarm coffee, I'm watching the kids in my muddy, weed infested "garden". I'd love to say it's weedy because it's been muddy. But, I have no such good excuse. You'll just have to appreciate my "intentions". In my mind, I have a gorgeous, completely weed free garden. In raised beds. Row upon row of weed free raised beds. Just like Aunt Becky's. In reality, I have a muddy, weedy mess. It's embarassing. I'm sure when the kids are older, and require less maintenance I will have the garden of my dreams.( And possibly a gardener to take care of it.) In the meantime, they can make up for ruining my morning coffee by harvesting tomatoes for me!
Liam is more of an overseer. he doesn't want to get stuck by the thistles lurking under every tomato. Truly, they hurt and everytime I attempt to purge them all from the garden 2 more spring up in place of every one I pulled. I'm at a loss on how to get rid of the cursed things. Maggie is more like me, less like Liam. She views the whole thing like a challenge. Picking tomatoes in my thistle bed is like playing a game of operation. It requires skill, a steady hand.
This is the first year I've grown Roma tomatoes. Maggie appears to be confounded by the shape.
The Roma's are part of my master plan. I'm a planner. Not always a doer though. Every year, I have the best of "intentions"...I will can tomatoes. Every year, I criminally let hundreds of tomatoes rot on the vine...then buy canned tomatoes all winter. But NO MORE!!! This year, I am doing it! I am doing it. I am doing it. I am...
trying to convince myself it will be ok.
I can do it.

Dad recommended that I freeze them. This is a good recommendation. I considered it. Then decided I'm FAR too intimidated by canning. I must get past this! I can do it!
I am anticipating a GREAT sense of accomplishment when it's done. So much build up over such a silly little thing. Anyhoo, as I started saying, the Romas are because I read in a seed catalog that they are the best for canning. At this point, I'm wondering how grape tomatoes do for canning...because I have a gazillion of the little boogers!
It's getting close now. I have a fair number of tomatoes. I'm guessing it will have to be this week. I can do it. I can do it. I can do it.
I love you all...don't worry...I'll keep you posted!
